Avocado oil vs olive oil: which is better for your kitchen?

Both are beloved kitchen oils. Here's how avocado oil and olive oil really compare on flavour, smoke point, and nutrition.

Avocado oil and olive oil are often spoken about in the same breath — both extracted from fruit, both rich in monounsaturated fats, both adored by chefs. But for cooks looking to make the most considered choice, the differences matter. At Imara Avocado Factory, we press pure Hass avocado oil in Kenya, and we are often asked how it really compares to olive oil.

The clearest distinction is heat. Cold-pressed extra virgin avocado oil has a notably high smoke point, comfortably suitable for searing, roasting and high-temperature pan work. Extra virgin olive oil is gentler in the pan, better suited to finishing, gentle sautéing and dressings. If your cooking lives at high heat, avocado oil is the more forgiving partner.

On flavour, the two oils diverge. Premium avocado oil from Kenya carries a clean, buttery profile with a faintly grassy finish — never bitter, never sharp. Olive oil is more assertive, with peppery, herbaceous notes that can either lift a dish or overpower it. Avocado oil, by contrast, lets the ingredients lead.

Nutritionally, both are excellent sources of monounsaturated fats and vitamin E. Avocado oil is particularly noted for its lutein content and naturally high oleic acid. Whichever you reach for, the rule is the same — choose oils that are cold-pressed, single-origin and traceable to a real producer.
